This piece was made to aid in the support of the Palestinian people as they attempt to navigate the horrors they are facing from the Israeli government. Pulling imagery from the land and culture, this necklace is meant to be worn as a badge to honor the resilience of Palestine and hopes for a peaceful future. The watermelon is being portrayed as both the sun and as seeds planted in the earth. At the center of the golden sun beams is a single golden key. This symbol of the Nakba has been passed on for generations as a reminder of lost homes and as a lasting reminder of their "right of return". The enamel pendant hangs from the parting leaves of an olive branch, both a widely recognized symbol of peace as well as a powerful symbol of Palestinian rootedness in their land. The chain is adapted from part of the keffiye (Palestinian scarf) that depicts a fisherman's net which symbolizes the connection between sailors and the Mediterranean Sea.
